In a statement released July 14, 2010, Shabaab al-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the coordinated July 11, 2010 bombings that targeted crowds watching the World Cup final, killing more than 70. The bombings were in response to “the atrocities perpetrated by Uganda against the Muslim Somali population” as “her forces, serving under the auspices of the African Union, grasp every opportunity available to unleash their anger against Islam and the Muslims by bombarding our innocent men, women, and children with mortars day and night.” The communiqué also urged the “Muslims of Uganda…to rush to the aid of your Muslim brothers in Somalia and stand together firmly in their defense. This is an obligation of religion and creed.”
